| Where Can I Learn? You can learn poi wherever you have enough space to swing them, personally I prefer in the middle of the countryside on the top of a hill on a beautiful sunny day but as I'm in the UK that only happens once a year so I have to make do with the back garden and the local park. There are learning materials all over the place, you'll find some of the best poi sites that I've found on the links page and please let me know if you find a site that helps you so I can put a link up. There are also the lessons on this site and forums with details of local events which are probably your best place to start if you don't already know someone who spins. | What Are Poi? Poi is an old Maori tradition from the beautiful land of New Zealand. It started many years ago when Maori warriors would use rocks in flax baskets at the end of flax ropes to improve their co-ordination and strength, the women would use poi for dance. These days it's a lot different, no Maori used sock or fire poi and they didn't use them for dance until they had already been around for a very long time. |
| Who am I and why did I make this site? I'm Ben, otherwise known as magicmonkey or poijoy depending which sites you see me on. I've been doing poi for about a year now but didn't really get much time in over the winter, now it's summer it's becoming an obsession again! I don't really know why I made this site, it started out as a bit of time wasting and turned into a whole lot of learning about web design and I just got so wrapped up in it I had to finish it off. Currently I'm looking for a niche I can fill in the poi site community but coming up pretty short, if anyone has ideas about where they would like to see the site go then please don't be afraid to use the forums to let me know. |
The New Site For those of you who haven't been here before this is a major facelift to the site, Hopefully I'll attract a few new people with all the shiny new stuff. The old site was pretty lame but it was my first go at doing a web site, I'm sure that I'll think this is pretty lame in a few weeks time and redesign again but for now I'll leave it at this I think. In addition to the poi site there is also a photography web site of mine to be found here which is really just a personal site but you're welcome to come have a look and post comments etc. |
Poijoy will stay open, enough emails!!!!
